Heart Disease in Women

Article by Debra Gropp

As a woman, do you really need to worry about heart disease? The answer is a resounding yes! Heart disease is the number one killer of American women. Though it is thought of as a men’s disease, more women than men die of heart disease each year.

Post-reproductive age women are most at risk. However, pre-menopausal women are also at risk for cardiovascular disease if they have cardiac risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and family history of premature cardiovascular disease.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE HEART DISEASE?

Cardiovascular disease can be silent but usually has symptoms. Lack of blood flow to the heart muscle can cause symptoms of chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fatigue and sometimes palpitations and dizziness.

Talking to your doctor about your symptoms, along with good routine follow-up care are necessary first steps to determine if any further evaluation is necessary. Many cardiac risk factors can be controlled, modified or eliminated, including hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.

Chest pain has not been perceived to be the best signal that heart disease is really present. Chest pain can have different origins and women can experience uncharacteristic features of cardiac chest discomfort.

If a woman has palpitations (the sensation of fast and/or irregular heartbeat) or other symptoms such as dizziness or shortness of breath, she should inform her doctor. Your doctor can take a careful history and perform a physical exam.

HEART DISEASE RISK FACTORS

The three biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease that can be prevented are:

*Cigarette smoking

*High blood pressure

*High blood cholesterol

Other contributing risk factors that can be present:

*Diabetes, or high blood sugar, raises the risk of coronary heart disease. The risk of death from heart disease is about three times higher in women with diabetes. Diabetic women also are more apt to have high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol.

*The risk of heart attack or stroke is higher for women who both smoke and use high-dose birth control pills (oral contraceptives).

*Excess body weight in women is linked with coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and death from heart-related causes. The more overweight you are, the higher your risk is for heart disease and many other ailments and diseases.

*Studies show that physical inactivity is a risk factor for heart disease. Heart disease is almost twice as likely to develop in inactive people as in those more active.

Just one risk factor will raise your chances of having heart-related problems. The more risk factors you have, the more likely you are to develop cardiovascular diseases.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE YOUR RISK OF HEART DISEASE?

General recommendations to avoid heart disease:

*Quit smoking

*Cut back on foods high in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol

*Check blood pressure and cholesterol levels

*Get more exercise

*Lose weight if you are overweight

Regular physical activity can help you reduce your risk of coronary heart disease. Being active helps women take off extra pounds, helps to control blood pressure, lessens the need for insulin, and boosts the level of *good* HDL-cholesterol.

CAN DIET AND EXERCISE REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Following a low fat, low-cholesterol diet and a regular exercise plan are excellent health habits for all to follow. They help lower blood pressure and blood sugar. These are all factors that contribute to the development of arteriosclerosis (hardening and blockage of the blood vessels).

Physically active women have a much lower risk of heart disease than sedentary women. Being physically active does not necessarily mean an aggressive exercise regimen. It can be simple activities like daily walking, climbing stairs, gardening etc. Unfortunately, however, many women are physically inactive.

Heart Disease in Women: The Number One Women Killer

Article by Honey B. Wackx

Heart disease in women is something we all should be aware of and not just women. We can spread the knowledge of the seriousness of the disease to those women that are unaware of the problem of heart disease in women. It’s mostly in recent years that there has been more awareness of this problem.

Surveys conducted by the AHA between 1997 and 2003 showed that awareness of heart disease as the leading cause of death in women rose from 30% in 1997 to 46% in 2003. Awareness in white women (55%) was nearly twice as high as among African-American (30%) and Hispanic (27%) women. Data from the Women Veteran Cohort, age 35 and older, showed 42% of women were concerned about heart disease. Only 8% to 20% were aware that coronary artery disease is the major cause of death for women.

To understand the seriousness of heart disease in women, we need to first look at the facts. According to recent studies, it’s found that more than 8 million American women are currently living with some form of heart disease. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women. More women die of heart disease than any other illness each year.

Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)According to the most recent study by NHANES in 1999-2004 the prevalence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) shows 15.4% of that heart disease in women in the age group 60-79 years of age and 21.6% of CHD heart disease in women over 79 years with it.

Diagnosed heart attacksIn another ARIC: 1987-2000 study it shows Annual number of American women having diagnosed heart attack as follows: Age 29-44, 10,000 Age 45-64, 88,000 Age 65+ 372,000

Heart disease in women can be diagnosed and treated but the key to staying healthy is prevention. Once a woman finds out that she has heart disease, it may already be too late. Chances are that woman has engaged in several risk factors throughout her lifetime that contributed to her contracting the disease.

Some heart disease risk factorscigarette smokinginactivityhigh cholesterolhigh blood pressurediabetesobesity

Such risk factors as these increase the risk of heart disease in women. Most of these mentioned above can be treated without necessarily resorting to medicine. However diabetes does require medical treatment, usually eating the right foods and other restrictions. High cholesterol and high blood pressure may or may not require medical treatment but you should see your doctor for testing and treatment or recommendations.

Women need to understand that these risk factors need to be avoided as much as possible because they are so susceptible to the disease. Heart disease in women doesn’t need to be as much of an epidemic it has become. With just a few lifestyle changes, all women can once more live long and healthy lives without the risk for heart disease.

Of course, there are other risk factors that increase the risk for heart disease in women that can’t be helped. These risk factors include age, heredity, the effects of menopause, etc. By knowing this, women should arm themselves with as much information as they can so that they can know just what they are dealing with.

Estimated lifetime cost of CHDFor women with non-obstructive CHD enrolled in the Women’s Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) study of the NHLBI, the average lifetime cost estimate was about 0 000 and ranged from .0 to .1 million for women with 1-vessel to 3-vessel CHD.

Previous symptoms may be absentHeart disease in women doesn’t need to have such a high morality rate. On the basis of data from the FHS of the NHLBI 64% of women who died suddenly of CHD had no previous symptoms of this disease. This makes it important to be concerned about your heart health, since you may or may not know you have a heart disease problem.

Lifestyle changes can helpBy adopting a few lifestyle changes such as getting more exercise, eating right, quitting smoking and reducing stress levels, women can drastically reduce the propensity for heart disease. This is important not only for heart disease but for other diseases as well.

Heart disease in women does claim many lives each and every year but the disease can be manageable and preventable if detected early enough. Women need to study and learn as much as they can. They need to be educated. Not many women know that they have a good probability of getting the disease. By understanding and knowing this, women will have a step up on this horrible disease and, maybe one day, heart disease in women will be a thing of the past.

Weight Loss For Women And Hcg

Even though the obesity rates in women have leveled off in the last ten years, at about 60%, overweight and obese women face increased health risks that are critical to address, and focusing on significant weight loss is the best way to quickly reduce risk. Weight loss is particularly important for women who tend to carry extra weight on their belly, in the typical “apple shape,” because those are the women at the highest level of risk because of the way their bodies store fat encourage a disproportionate release of hormones that contribute to bad health.

Women who are overweight are at an increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Recent studies have determined that the excess fat stored on a woman’s body also triggers hormonal imbalances that can lead to infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome, irregular menstrual cycles, migraines, and exacerbated PMS and PMDD. Using hCG is a very effective treatment for weight loss in women when standard protocols, including a very low calorie diet and regular stretching exercise of 15 minutes per day or less, are combined with the injections.

Weight loss is the number one way to reduce the risk of cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes and hCG weight loss is a safe and fast way to regain control of your health. Often, patients who lose weight are able to stop taking high blood pressure and diabetes medicines and can reduce blood pressure to a health level. As well, hCG protects your lean muscle mass while encouraging your body to release fat stores, making it possible to actually increase lean muscle through weight lifting and aerobic exercise after losing fat, resulting in a significant and rapid transformation of the body. As lean muscle mass increases, the resting metabolic rate also improves, making it possible for your body to burn more calories while at rest.

Because the hCG injections control your body’s response to the lower calories, you do not feel as hungry or weak when significantly reducing your intake of food. And because of the release of such a significant amount of stored fat, your body typically adjusts very quickly to less calories because there are so many released stores of calories your body has available. When you have finished the protocol, your hypothalamus is able to reset and will continue to promote less fat storage, making it possible for you to maintain your weight loss with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Women who are overweight and want to lose weight as quickly as possible without enduring the risks associated with invasive surgeries should consider hCG weight loss as an alternative. The injections are done with a fine needle and cause virtually no pain, and the results can achieve with hCG weight loss are significant and dramatic. Most women report losses of at least up to one pound per day without feeling tired or hungry, and as the weight loss continues, it becomes easier and easier to stretch more, eat less, and make significant changes to your lifestyle that promote continued health.

Terramed Alliance News Moderate Alcohol Consumption Increases Risk of Cancer in Women

Article by Terramed Alliance Breast Cancer Org.

Terramed Alliance News Women who regularly consume low to moderate amounts of alcohol have an increased risk of cancers of the upper digestive tract, rectum, liver, and breast when compared with women who do not drink, according to the results of a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The best “treatment” for cancer is to prevent it from occurring. Research is ongoing to evaluate environmental and lifestyle factors that may be associated with an increased incidence of cancer. Identifying such risk factors may allow individuals to modify lifestyle choices in order to reduce their risk of developing cancer. The Million Women Study in the United Kingdom involved over 1.3 million middle-aged women who responded to a questionnaire regarding sociodemographic and personal information, including alcohol consumption. These women were followed for several years in an effort to determine how reproductive and lifestyle factors affect women’s health. The current study used the data from just over 1.2 million of the women in the Million Women Study, excluding some women based on pre-existing cancers or because pertinent information was excluded on the questionnaire. About one-quarter of the cohort reported drinking no alcohol. Of the remaining women who reported consuming alcohol, 98% consumed fewer than 21 drinks per week, with the average being one drink per day. (Fewer than three drinks per day is considered low to moderate alcohol consumption.)The women were followed for an average of 7.2 years, during which 68,775 invasive cancers occurred. Increased alcohol consumption was associated with increased risks of some cancers. With each additional drink consumed per day, the risk of breast cancer increased by 11%, oral cavity/pharynx cancer by 29%, esophageal cancer by 22%, larynx cancer by 44%, liver cancer by 24%, and total cancer by 6%.The researchers concluded that low to moderate alcohol consumption increases the risk of certain cancers. Thyroid disease affect approximately 27 million people in the United States.  More women than men are commonly found to suffer from thyroid symptoms.  It is estimated that 4 out of 100 women have some type of autoimmune thyroid disease.

A thyroid that is underproducing thyroid hormone is termed hypothyroidism.  It is characterized by insufficient levels of the primary thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).  Thyroxine is transformed into it’s active form of triiodothyronine by the liver.

As women have a higher incidence of thyroid problems than men, hypothyroidism is the main diagnosis, resulting in fatigue, weight gain, depression, high cholesterol and other symptoms.  By contrast, a smaller number of women develop hyperthyroidism, or an overproduction of thyroid hormone in the blood.

Symptoms of thyroid disease:

Hyperthyroidism:

Feeling warm
Increased perspiration
Weakness and fatigue
Trembling hands
Rapid heartbeat
Weight loss
Diarrhea
Irritability / anxiety
Eye discomfort
Menstrual changes
Inability to conceive

Hypothyroidism:

Fatigue
Depression
Sluggishness
Feeling cold
Weight gain of 5–10 pounds
Dry hair and skin
Constipation
Menstrual changes

Hormone Imbalance And Menopause:

Approximately 20% of menopausal women in the US are diagnosed with a problematic thyroid, and many women go undiagnosed.  For women in their late 30’s or 40’s, hypothyroidism is indicative of being perimenopausal, which is the time of up to 15 years of before menopause.  Some women experience menopause in their early 40s, especially if their mothers entered menopause at a relatively early age.

What causes a woman to develop hypothyroidism?

A hormone imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, as well as emotional and physical stresses can cause thyroid dysfunction.  Perimenopause, menopause, and pregnancy are known culprits of hormone imbalance that can cause hypothyroidism. An imbalance of more estrogen than progesterone can cause the hypoactive thyroid to produce less thyroid hormones, resulting in hypothryoidism.  This can be remedied by a prescription of progesterone supplements to bring this imbalance more into balance, thus alleviating symptoms of hypoactivity.

Other causes can include adrenal fatigue and insulin resistance.  The adrenal glands are located on top of our kidneys and are responsible for releasing adrenaline, which is essential in the flight or fight response.
This is a stress response and if it goes on for too long, the adrenal glands can become fatigued.  This can have a direct response on the thyroid gland and it’s ability to function correctly, resulting in hypothyroidism.

Insulin resistance often goes hand in hand with underactive thyroid, which has a relationship with poor nutrition that can disrupt thyroid functionality.  Women should be tested for insulin resistance if they have been diagnosed with a hypoactive thyroid.

In order for the thyroid to function normally, it is important to be able to manage stress, nutrition, and exercise, as well as the balance of the major hormones.  They all work together for the common good of the body.  The old saying “no man is an island”, can be related to your thyroid too.  It can not work alone, as it takes a concerted effort of the whole body for everything to work as it should.

Symptoms of an underactive thyroid can easily be mistaken for some other condition, which can cause a delay in much needed treatment.  If thyroid malfunction is the cause of your symptoms, a simple blood test will bear this out.  You will feel much better in a few weeks of starting thyroid therapy, if it has been determined that you indeed have a thyroid problem. Check with your physician to rule out any other underlying or more serious conditions.
