Types of Asthma: Extrinsic and Intrinsic

Article by Alien Sheng

Types of Asthma

Asthma is a growing worldwide problem. Asthma is classified in various ways. Traditionally, doctors have categorised asthma into two general groups, Extrinsic (allergic) asthma and Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma, depending upon the types of stimuli that flare up these attacks.

Extrinsic (allergic) asthma:

More prevalent in the younger age group, extrinsic asthma is caused by the immune system’s response to inhaled allergens such as pollen, animal dander or dust mite particles. People with allergic asthma frequently have other allergy-related problems such as hay fever, rhinitis, skin rashes, eczema.

Extrinsic asthma responds quite well to the use of inhaled steroids as these suppress the immune system.Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma-

Intrinsic asthma is caused by anything except an allergy. It may be caused by an infection, stress, laughter, exercise, cold air, food preservatives or a host of other factors.

Treatment of intrinsic asthma is not easy as it may not be known what triggers the asthma in the first place and therefore avoiding triggers can be impossible.

Mixed asthma -

As the name suggests, mixed asthma is a mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic asthma. Not only do people react to some allergies but their asthma is also triggered by other factors.

It is common for someone with an extrinsic form of asthma to experience attacks when he has a chest infection – an intrinsic trigger.

Other types of asthma include:

Childhood asthma -

This form of asthma occurs as a child, and most of the time, you outgrow it on growing up. This happens because body goes through a number of functional/hormonal changes while growing up. The treatment of childhood asthma is quite similar to adult asthma as the cause is no different.

Adult-onset asthma -

Adult-onset asthma usually develops after the age of 20, and it affects more women than men. Allergens play a significant role in adults becoming asthmatic. Asthma can actually start at any age and in a wide variety of situations. Another major cause of adult asthma is exposure at work to animal products, plastic, pollution, mites, wood dust, or metals.

Bronchial asthma -

Bronchial asthma is an allergic reaction associated with extreme breathing difficulties and wheezing. The muscles wrapped around the airways, become narrow and spasm. Thick mucus is usually produced in large quantities and the airways become irritated. Most of the attacks are triggered by hyper-sensitivity to air-borne particles(dust, pollen) or any sort of allergy to foods.

Seasonal Asthma -

Seasonal asthma can be triggered by trees, fruits, seeds, grasses or flowers releasing pollen in the air or during any particular climate. For example, some people may have their asthma aggravated during the cold winter season, while others find spring is particularly bad with the increase in flowering plants and air pollen.

Silent Asthma -

Such asthma attacks give very little or no prior warning. They are usually severe and can be even life-threatening.

Nocturnal Asthma

This type of asthma induces wheezing only at night, especially in the wee hours of morning. It is triggered by allergens in home such as dust and pet hair or is caused by sinus conditions. The patient may have wheezing or short breath when lying down or may not notice these symptoms until awoken by them in the middle of the night, usually between 2 and 4am.

A useful treatment in this case is to take a steroid inhaler before going to bed. This reduces the tendency of the airways to narrow. Another measure is to wash bed linen regularly to kill dust mites that cause irritation.

This type of asthma is more difficult to recognize as there are no daytime symptoms, and usually delay proper treatment.

Sports asthma/Exercise-induced asthma -

Shortness of breath and coughing occurring after an exhausting exercise is termed exercise-induced asthma. This is believed to be a reaction to changes in temperature of air in the lung. This phenomenon happens in up to 80% of people with recognized asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma involves symptoms that usually occur about 5-20 minutes after beginning an exercise that involves breathing through the mouth. Sport activities that require continuous strenuous activity or that are played in cold weather are very dangerous and the most likely to trigger an asthma attack.

Precautions include using a bronchodilator inhaler just prior to the sports activity and deep nasal breathing until the body feels warmed up.

Cough variant asthma -

Coughing can occur alone, without the other symptoms of asthma that are usually present. Cough variant asthma causes great difficulty for the doctor to accurately diagnose the true underlying cause of asthma because it can be easily confused with other conditions, such as bronchitis or hay fever or sinusitis. Coughing can occur anytime – day or night.

Occupational asthma -

Occupational asthma occurs due to a trigger in the place of work. Common triggers include pollutants in the air, such as smoke, chemicals, fumes, dust, or other particles; respiratory diseases, such as colds and flu; allergens in the air, such as molds, animal hair, bird feathers, and pollen; extremes of temperature or humidity; and emotional changes.

Most of the trigger substances are very commonly found, and are not normally hazardous. In most people with occupational asthma, the symptoms appear a short time after initiating work and disappear after abandoning the job premises.

Allergy asthma -

This type of asthma is synonymous with a running and blotchy nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and coughing. Steroid inhalers are used in this condition which soothe the air passages. The best preventive method is to avoid the triggering substances. Allergy desensitization treatment is also a possible option which works by gradually exposing the body to minute amounts of the allergic substance and working up to normal amounts without causing a reaction.

Steroid-resistant asthma -

While most of patients respond to regular steroid therapy, particularly inhaled glucocorticoids (GCs), some are steroid resistant. Glucocorticoids act in asthma by reducing airway inflammation and immune activation. However, patients with steroid resistant asthma have higher levels of immune activation in their airways.

Lupus Arthritis

Lupus arthritis is the most common expression of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or SLE, like rheumatoid arthritis. It is an auto-immune condition where the body’s immune system causes damage to the joints. Mostly the joints are affected in SLE and also the hands, wrists and knees.

Spondyloarthropathies

The spondyloarthropathies are uncommon states such as ankylosing sodalities, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome and enteropathic arthritis. All of these conditions are related with other troubles such as back pain, heel pain, and other state. The spondyloarthropathies are those specific chromosomal patterns that are usually thought to be related to a patient’s genetics.

Infectious Arthritis

Infectious arthritis causes inflammation leading to knee pain. Added names for the infectious arthritis consist of bacterial and septic arthritis. Treatments of the septic arthritis depend on the origin of the infection but frequently require surgery to freshen the infection from the joint.

Diabetes is a common disease, but not all individuals truly know the features and characteristics of the condition. Knowing the triggers and potential risks can help you get rid of the problem, as well as find the right measures that will hopefully minimize the chances. You will also learn more about treatment and medications, provided you already know the type that you have. Here is some more information on the nature and things to expect.

1. Overview of the Condition

Diabetes mellitus or just diabetes, is a condition wherein a person develops high blood sugar or glucose level because the body is not producing right amounts of insulin, or due to body cells not correctly responding to insulin being produced. Insulin is a kind of hormone created in the pancreas that allows cells in the body to absorb glucose and convert it into energy. If the cells of the body do not readily absorb glucose, it accumulates in the blood, thereby triggering hyperglycemia. Other complications can also follow.

2. Types of Diabetes

There are several kinds of diabetes, but the most commonly known are Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is triggered by the body’s failure to create insulin naturally. The person will need to inject insulin. Type 2 diabetes comes from insulin resistance, described as a condition wherein the cells fail to use insulin correctly, at times mixed with total deficiency in insulin. Gestational diabetes occurs among pregnant women, who did not have the problem before. These women also have high blood glucose level at the time of pregnancy. The condition may occur before Type 2 diabetes mellitus occurs.

3. Other Forms

Other types of diabetes mellitus include congenital diabetes, which occurs because of the genetic problems of insulin secretion, steroid diabetes triggered by high doses of glucocorticoids, cystic fibrosis-linked diabetes and several monogenic diabetes forms. All types of diabetes can be treated effectively since the time insulin was made medically available in 1921. The specific cure, however, is not yet present. There is little success in Type 1 DM when it comes to pancreas transplants. With Type 2 DM, gastric bypass surgery can be successful. The gestational type usually occurs right after pregnancy.

4. On Complications

Complications can happen with each type of diabetes. Acute complications can vary, such as hyperosmolar coma, non-ketonic hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. More serious long term complications include chronic renal failure, cardiovascular disease and retinal damage. The right treatment of diabetes is very important, including lifestyle changes and blood pressure control. The person may need to maintain healthy body weight, stop smoking and drinking and do regular physical activity.

5. The Morbidity

About 171 million individuals all over the globe have diabetes. That equates to around 2.8% of the total world population. Type 2 diabetes is the most common, which affects 90% to 95% of the United States diabetes population. People develop the problem during different times of their lives. Some can get the problem during childhood, also referred to as juvenile diabetes mellitus. Others may only get the problem late in their 60s or 70s.

Types of Diabetes

eHealthInsurance, 3 Easy Steps to Health Insurance, 300 x 250

The American Diabetes Association adopted the following classification in 1979: Type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes and Type-2, non insulin-dependent diabetes

There are two other kinds of diabetes, known as gestational diabetes and secondary diabetes. There is also a special kind of diabetes in India called malnutrition related diabetes.

Type-1 Insulin-Dependant Diabetes: This is the most severe form of diabetes. It develops when pancreas makes little or no insulin. Without insulin in the blood stream, sugar does not get into the cells, and remains in the blood. People with type-1 diabetes depend on injections of insulin to regulate their smaller metabolism.

Type-2 Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes: This type of diabetes is also known as adult onset diabetes. It seldom develops before the age of 40 years, although it may occur at any stage. Infect the incidence of type-2 diabetes in adolescents in on the rise. But because the symptoms are milk, these may not notice and the condition remains undetected for a long period and till later years.

One common factor in both type-1 and type-2 diabetes is elevated blood sugar levels. However, unlike type-1 diabetes, type-2 is not a disease of the immune system. While people with type-1 diabetes must use insulin to live, most of those with type-2 diabetes are able to control the disease and even reverse it. This is possible by a combination of appropriate diet, proper weight control and adequate exercise.

Diabetes Types: What are the Different Types of Diabetes?

There are different diabetes types to be aware of, especially if you think that you may be at risk for developing diabetes. Here is a brief overview of the most commonly-experienced Diabetes Mellitus types:

Type 1 diabetes mellitus:

Very rarely is seen amongst those older than 30 years of age. It is most prevalent in children and young adults between 10 and 17; Has no definitive causes although it is believed to be caused by genetic predisposition and or a virus. Other possible cause include infections, high fevers and bacterium; Is also called “insulin-dependent” diabetes mellitus because insulin injections are always one part of the treatment plan; Is incurable currently although research continues for pancreatic Islet replacement surgeries and other possible cures; Accounts for roughly 10% of all diabetes mellitus cases;

Gestational diabetes mellitus:

Develops in women during the later stages of pregnancy. Develops in women who have otherwise been diabetes-free all of their lives; Is effectively controllable and reversible in most cases through healthy dieting and exercise alone; Almost always goes completely away after delivery; Is caused by poor dietary choices and sedentary living in over 85% of cases;

Type 2 diabetes mellitus:

Accounts for roughly 90% of all cases of diabetes mellitus; Has seen a more than 76% increase since 1990; Is caused almost in every case by improper dietary choices, poor eating habits and lacking exercise standards; Is effectively controllable and many times reversible through positive changes in diet and exercise; Is very often seen in people who are overweight and/or obese; Is almost 100% preventable;

The different diabetes types all have one thing in common: they are greatly lessened in severity when combated with a healthy water-rich diet and daily physical movement. Over 25 percent of all Americans have been labeled as being completely sedentary. We have become the fattest and laziest nation on the planet here in the US and the all-time record-high disease rates are showing that clearly.

In addition to the more than 15 million reported cases of diabetes mellitus currently in the US, there are also more than 57 million people who are believed to have pre diabetes. Moreover, there are an additional one million plus new cases of diabetes mellitus reported annually in the US alone.

Given that the main causes of diabetes mellitus are poor dietary and lacking exercise standards, one needs only to initiate a healthy type 2 diabetes diet and get daily exercise for about a half an hour in order to cease the development in most cases. Take the initiative and act today to alleviate the development of diabetes mellitus before you have to.

Today is your chance to turn your life around and begin living the vibrantly-healthful life that you have always dreamed about. Diabetes Information – Symptoms, Types, Causes and Treatment

Sugar is part of a whole slew of meals. The carbohydrates that we eat are later on converted into sugar or glucose while it undergoes the processes inside our body. These sugars are what we use for energy. However, there are really foods that are pure sugar or contain a lot it, which can cause the sugar level in our blood. When this sugar level increase, we may suffer diabetes and other ailments.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease resulting from the increase of blood sugar level above its normal values. The sugars in the blood are supposed to be transported to the cells of the body. But if a person has diabetes, the sugar build up in the blood. The build up of sugar is caused one of the following reasons: either the pancreas is not producing enough hormones called insulin that helps the glucose get into the cells or the body can not make use of the insulin as it is supposed to be.

Diabetes is a disease that exists not only on its own but could trigger a lot of complications and other diseases to surface. These diabetes complications include heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and amputations. It has become one of the major causes of death all over the world.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Like any other sickness, diabetes surface symptoms that should be monitored. These are physically manifested symptoms that could easily diagnosed so if anyone is suffering from the following, seeing a physician is recommended. Diabetes have the following signs: extreme hunger and thirst, excessive drying of the skin, unexplained weight loss, frequent urination, slow healing sores, tingling or numbness of hands or feet, sudden vision blurredness.

When the diabetes is insulin-dependent, other symptoms include nausea, vomiting or stomach pains.

Types of Diabetes

There are three kinds of diabetes that could be developed to specific age range or condition of people. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or the type 1 diabetes is commonly developed among children while non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or the type 2 diabetes is developed among adults. There is also the kind of diabetes that only pregnant women can acquire. The gestational diabetes, though, is not permanent because it disappears as soon as the pregnancy is over; however, if it is not treated it can cause a threat to both the mother and the baby.

Type 2 diabetes is affected by old age, obesity, family history of the ailment, history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, lack of physical activities and race or ethnicity.

Causes of Diabetes

Though researchers have found out what are the things that causes the acquisition of diabetes, the determination of the exact causes of the disease is yet to be discovered. They say that the causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are different. Type 1 seemed to be developed from environmental triggers like unidentified virus that attacks the pancreas and causes it to malfunction in producing insulin.

Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is closely associated with being obese and regular physical activities can help prevent the development of which.

Therapies and Treatment for Diabetes

When a person has developed type 1 diabetes, his or her blood glucose levels should be closely monitored through regular glucose tests. Since most food intake contains sugar or substances that will later on be converted to sugar, it is necessary that the food to be eaten is also monitored or measured. Healthy diet, exercise and insulin injections are the basic treatments for type 1 diabetes. However, the insulin should be balanced with metabolism of the body in terms of physical activities and food intake.

Treatment for type 2 diabetes is almost the same with that of type 1. Blood glucose should also be closely monitored; however, some people are required to take some oral medications to avoid blood sugar to increase beyond normal parameters. Since this type of diabetes is not insulin-dependent, insulin injections are not required.

What Are The Effective Types of Asthma Remedy

Most asthmatics once they discovered that they possess asthma after being diagnosed by their medical practitoners, they immediately evaluate the severity of their asthma and determine what are the effective types of asthma remedy that are most suitable and work best for them.

There are virtually hundreds if not thousands of different drugs that can be used to treat asthma, essentially there are two different distinct categories of medicine that can be prescribed: controller medicines and quick-fix medicines.

1) Controller Medicine

This type of asthma medicine will assist in controlling the inflammation in the lungs which will allow for easier breathing and less attacks. Some known controller medicines are Vanceril, Tilade, Intal, AeroBid and Accolate.

These types of asthma remedy are usually given in the form of an inhalant or a pill. If you experience frequent asthma attacks, or cough that can’t be control, your medical practitioner will probably instruct you to take this kind of asthma medication every day.

2) Quick-Fix Medicine

While this type of asthma medicine can be quite effective, it is normally not safe for daily use. Its use is intended to control an active asthma attack, or prevent an attack once symptoms have become apparent.

This type of asthma medicine is also sometimes known as a “rescue medicine”. Some of the known quick-fix medicines are Albuterol, Atrovent and Prednisone. This type of asthma medicine can be prescribed as a liquid, a pill and as an inhalant.

3) Other alternate asthma medicines

There is also another group of medicines that are used to treat asthma. There are types of asthma remedy known as a combination medicine. Combination medicines contain both a controller medicine and a quick-relief medicine in the same inhaler.

In the recent past, an inhaler that has been approved that allows the user to adjust the amount of medication that is being administered so it can be changed according to a person’s condition.

Some common side effects of asthma medicine

Causing some side effects when consuming medication are common, and an asthma medicine is no exception. While most people are able to receive asthma treatment free of unwanted side effects, there have been some side effects reported by those using an asthma medicine.

Some of the common side effects reported are

#1 headache

#2 voice changes

#3 sore throat

#4 swollen glands in the neck

#5 runny nose

#6 hoarseness and congestion.

If you experience the above side effects as the result of taking an asthma medicine, be sure to inform your doctor immediately.

However, with the help of an asthma medicine, many asthma sufferers are able to lead full, active lives that are productive. While not all sufferers will experience the same level of control over their asthma, using an asthma medicine can greatly improve their quality of life.

At most of the times, your asthma remedy will be very important to you. You won’t want to leave your home once you have your asthma medication without it. Don’t suffer anymore and make sure you get the asthma medication that you need as soon as possible!

Just remember, you are not destiny to suffer from this dreadful disease as most asthma medication can free yourself from asthma attacks thus saving your life. However. you should never add to, or alter any component of your current asthma treatment without first consulting your physician.

However, many asthmatics sometimes tend to forget that although they are taking proper and effective asthma medications, but without a proper asthma recovery system, there will not be much asthma free lifestyle to hope no matter how much knowledge you have with regards to the medications.

Apply this knowledge in your medication together with an effective asthma recovery system – enjoy your life once again.

Different Types Of Asthma, The Causes And Remedies

Asthma is an illness where irritants cause inflammation of the bronchial tubes, as they become very sensitive, and thus making it difficult to breath. Contraction of the muscles around the wind pipe can be a result of this inflammation. The inflammation can also cause excessive mucus in the air passage as well as swelling of the lining may occur if its an airway inflammation.

Age is not a factor as far as asthma is concerned though it’s notable that around 50 percent of the cases initiate in children below the age of 10. And among these children around 65 percent are boys compared to only 35 percent girls. It is one of the chief culprits as far as respiratory illness among teenagers and children are concerned. Though its observed that the condition may improve with age. 17 million American citizens are asthma patients according to estimation.

Asthma is a lung disease which can be reversed either with treatment or it may heal spontaneously. Obstruction or constriction of the airway is the characteristics of Asthma. Lack of breathe called dyspnea and mild wheezing constitute the moderate symptoms of asthma while fatal respiratory failures are the grave symptom. The mild symptoms may occur before a serious attack.

People suffering from asthma face difficulty breathing out but can breathe in without any problem. During inhalation the diaphragm lowers pushing the ribs out and thus enlarging the lungs to let air around any blockage. But during exhalation when the rib cage closes in, the diaphragm moves up obstructing the air from moving around the blockage.

Two types of asthma

Intrinsic asthma and extrinsic asthma are the two types of asthma. When allergy to some kind of external material causes asthma its called extrinsic. And when an obvious external agent is not identifiable it is called intrinsic asthma.

Substances like dust, pollens, dander, food, molds, feather pillows, some types of food additives etc may cause spontaneous allergic reaction in some children which may be a beginning of extrinsic asthma. It is a hereditary disorder called atopy where the body has an inclination for allergic reactions.

An intrinsic asthma usually follows a serious respiratory infection to which no external allergen can be associated. An intrinsic asthma condition may worsen due to emotional stress, changes in temperature or humidity, fatigue, irritants, exposure to fumes and gases etc. some people may be patients of intrinsic as well as extrinsic asthma.

All asthma attacks are not of the same degree. The oxygen supply to the critical organs may get severely affected due to closing of the airways in a serious asthma attack. This may lead to a medical emergency condition. Severe asthma attacks are known to be the reason for many deaths. An asthma attack gives a person a sensation similar to drowning.

Actions like medication or other remedies can be used to prevent an asthma attack if the asthma symptoms and its warning signs are learnt.

There may be long phases of time when an asthma patient either shows very few and feeble symptoms of asthma or doesn’t show any at all. But asthma attacks can also be seen to last for prolonged periods.

The cough may sound dry and stretched during a severe attack. A a thick mucus is expectorated as the attack abates. Small children don’t produce the mucus after an attack. The breathing is normal between severe attacks.

In symptomatic asthma it is typical for the breathing sound to get reduced. Also forced exhalation for long periods is typical of air passage blockage. Lung hyperinflation is usually very common in children. Tachypnea, tachycardia and diaphoresis may coincide with severe attack. The patient may not be able to speak without pausing to catch a breath after every few words. Initial signs of respiratory failure are lethargy, confusion and darkening (purple or blue) of the skin due to lack of oxygen called as Cyanosis.

Possible asthma remedies

Various drugs like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin may initiate an asthma attack. Even chemicals like Tartazine (yellow food dye) can cause an asthma attack. Heavy work and exercise may cause huge loss of moisture and heat in the upper airways. This may be followed by bronchospasm leading to exercise induced attack. Even exercise can be an attack initiator.

When treating severe asthma patients the target is to address the symptoms like coughing, wheezing, inflammation, airway swelling, lack of breath and lower them while an attempt is made to increase the pulmonary ventilation. Following a severe attack the treatment usually is focused on addressing the initiating factors like the irritants or the allergens in the environment.

In a process similar to vaccination, asthma may be treated by injecting the patient with limited amount of the antigen causing the attack when the cause of the asthma is identified as a particular toxin, bacterium, virus or other substance foreign to the body. This way the response of the immune system to the antigen is brought under control.
