<p>Blood pressure is a measure of the force that the blood applies to the walls of the arteries as it flows through them. It&#8217;s normal for blood pressure to increase when you exert yourself, or when you feel stressed or anxious. But if your blood pressure is consistently higher than normal at rest, this is high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.</p>
<p>High blood pressure (hbp) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. </p>
<p>Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Each time your heart beats, it pumps out blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, pumping the blood. This is called systolic pressure. When your heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. This is the diastolic pressure.</p>
<p>The most commonly used diuretic to treat high blood pressure in the UK is called bendroflumethiazide (bendrofluazide) &#8211; but there are others. For example, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, cyclopenthiazide, hydrochlorothiazide, and indapamide. Diuretics work by increasing the amount of salt and fluid that you pass out in your urine. This has some effect on reducing the fluid in the circulation which reduces blood pressure. They may also have a &#8216;relaxing&#8217; effect on the blood vessels which reduces the pressure within the blood vessels. Only a low dose of a diuretic is needed to treat high blood pressure. Therefore, you will not notice much diuretic effect (you will not pass much extra urine).The preferred treatment of choice for those suffering high blood pressure is usually a change of lifestyle.</p>
<p>For those who are overweight, smoke, lead highly stressful lives or seldom exercise, sometimes this is the only wake up call they need. Once they make the necessary lifestyle adjustments, they will often find their blood pressure symptom restored to a more normal range.Slightly raised blood pressure may not need to be treated so aggressively, but regular monitoring is important.If you have very severe high blood pressure, you may need to go to hospital for treatment. But it&#8217;s much more likely that you will be cared for by your GP and/or a nurse.</p>
<p>A recent study showed that they can be accurate, but sometimes are not. It usually is not possible to tell whether a particular machine is working properly. The cuff should inflate and fit snugly around your arm.Diabetes considerably increases the risk of cardiovascular disease if hypertension is also present, so the targets for blood pressure control in diabetes are tighter.</p>
<p>High blood pressure can occur in children or adults, but it&#8217;s more common among people over age 35. It&#8217;s particularly prevalent in African Americans, middle-aged and elderly people, obese people, heavy drinkers and women taking birth control pills. It may run in families, but many people with a strong family history of high blood pressure never have it. People with diabetes mellitus, gout or kidney disease are more likely to have high blood pressure, too.</p>

<p>There has always been a disparity between men and women when it comes to heart disease. For years, it was thought that heart disease only affected men and that it was the rare woman who developed heart problems, let alone had a heart attack. We now know that heart disease does affect women, but that their heart attack symptoms are different from a man&#8217;s typical signs and are often more likely to be ignored. There are a number of steps that men and women cannot change that increase their risk for heart disease, including their family history and genetics. However, there are other factors that can be changed. Six updated guidelines are: </p>
<p>- Learn to relax, especially with meditation. Studies have shown a 47% reduction in death, heart attacks and strokes in those who started practicing mediation after being diagnosed with heart disease. </p>
<p>- Education for self, families and community. </p>
<p>- Work to reduce blood pressure by losing weight, exercising and taking medication if it is needed. </p>
<p>- Know your waist measurement. Doctors have long said to lose weight or to control body mass index (BMI). However, new studies suggest that knowing your waist&#8217;s measurement may be more indicative of the heart disease risk that you face. The larger your waistline, the more likely it is that you are carrying your weight in your midsection. This fat is linked to higher triglyceride levels and an increased risk of diabetes in addition to heart disease. </p>
<p>- Increase the amount of vitamin D that you get. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to some forms of cardiovascular disease. Food sources include milk, salmon and fortified cereals. We also get vitamin D from the sun. </p>
<p>- Manage diabetes. Heart disease is the main cause of death for those with diabetes. 65% or more of those with diabetes will die from a heart problem or stroke. Diabetics are also two to four times more likely to have heart disease in the first place. </p>
<p>- Get enough sleep. The right amount of sleep every night can affect stress hormones, blood pressure and the metabolism. </p>

<p>Different Genders, Different Risks </p>
<p>When plaque builds up in a man&#8217;s arteries, it tends to block them off and cause obvious problems. However, recent studies have shown that when the same thing happens in a woman&#8217;s arteries, they just get bigger to accommodate both the plaque and the blood flow. Unfortunately, that means that the plaque is not being spotted by traditional tests that are only looking for blockages. The plaque accumulates over a lifetime, some believe starting during pregnancy. The buildup can cause symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue, which is often misdiagnosed by most doctors as something other than heart disease. Because the testing methods that are currently being used do not spot a blockage, the women are not cautioned to be alert to heart attack or other symptoms and are therefore more likely to die from their heart disease than a man would. There is a newer test that is recommended that can look at the smaller and more subtle symptoms that could indicate early cardiovascular disease. This t</p>

<p>How Losing Weight Can Help </p>
<p>Losing weight can help to keep the risk of heart disease reduced. In addition to reducing the risk of heart disease, losing weight can reduce the risk of diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and some cancers. Losing weight may also make it easier to get the right amount of exercise, which in turn can help to lose more weight. Staying active may also help in preventing arthritis and may slow the progression of some mental conditions, including Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and other dementia. </p>
<p>Even a small reduction in weight can be beneficial, especially in those who are apple shaped (small legs, larger midsections). Monitoring the waist to hip ratio may be even more important than keeping track of the body mass index. </p>
<p>Heart disease in women tends to start undetected and develop gradually and without notice but is also ironically more likely to result in their death. A man&#8217;s heart disease may present with problems fairly early and may not be fatal right away. In fact, a man may have several smaller heart attacks before he suffers a fatal one. A woman&#8217;s first heart attack is more likely to be her last. </p>
<p>Losing weight should never be about a fad or uncontrolled diet, which is also bad for the heart and the rest of the body as well. Sudden, large amounts of weight loss can throw the heart into abnormal rhythms, for instance, and may increase the risk of gall stones in those who are predisposed to them. It is also important to note that there are other problems noted with extreme weight loss, and it is equally important to note that the faster the weight goes, the more likely it will be to come back right away. </p>
<p>Healthy and Balanced Nutrition </p>
<p>The American Heart Association suggests that the best weight loss plan is one that stresses healthy foods and includes all of the major food groups. The aim should be to lose no more than one pound per week and to make gradual lifestyle changes. Getting the right amounts of carbohydrates, fats and proteins is important. Using the DASH diet might be helpful as well. DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) is the diet plan that is given to those who are combating high blood pressure, but it can be perfectly beneficial to others as well. It emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products and reduced sodium intake. </p>
<p>Using a protein supplement as either a between-meal snack or a meal replacement can be a good way to help reduce weight without causing the deprivation and starvation of severe reduced-calorie diets. <p>Cholesterol has an important role in your body. Building cell membranes and sex hormones are the vital function of cholesterol in the body. <p>Our body produces the cholesterol that we needed. Unfortunately, there are many sources of cholesterol that make the cholesterol level increase. It can be found in foods that we eat most, especially those containing high amount of fat. Having a high fat diet will cause serious problems with your health.</p>
<p>You should be aware of the various terminology that is related to lowering cholesterol like LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein). LDL is the bad cholesterol that causes plaque formation which clogs the arteries. <p>Before I start getting to deep into all of the lower cholesterol information let me first give you a basic description of what exactly is cholesterol. Cholesterol is a waxy fatty lipid found in the cells and tissues of our bodies. It not only comes from some of the foods that we eat but it also is manufactured by the liver and is needed as a natural function of the human body. Our bodies require a certain amount of fat and cholesterol is part of that requirement in order for us to exist.</p>
<p>Most people, including myself at on point in time, believed that all cholesterol was bad, but now after years of research it has been found that that is not completely true. In fact there are two types of cholesterol. One type is called LDL which is referred to as the bad cholesterol. The other is HDL which is the good cholesterol.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s first take a closer look at LDL or bad cholesterol. LDL can cause us problems because it tends to build up on the artery walls and over time this plaque build-up blocks blood flow. This plaque build-up reduces blood circulation which raises blood pressure, and eventually leads to heart disease or even worse a heart attack. </p>
<p>On the other hand, HDL or good cholesterol helps to reduce plaque by returning excess LDL to the liver and aids in its excretion. So now that you have a better understanding of what cholesterol is and how it affects you, let&#8217;s look at specific lower cholesterol information on how to lower the bad LDL and raise the good HDL.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier cholesterol comes from two sources. Your body produces it naturally and from the foods that we eat. Unfortunately for some of us our body because of our genetics tends to produce an excess of LDL cholesterol but don&#8217;t worry because there are ways to lower your bad cholesterol naturally and safely.</p>
<p>For most of us when we found out that we had high cholesterol our doctor wanted us to start taking a prescription drug. I don&#8217;t like and do not take prescription drugs because of the many dangerous side effects. Now don&#8217;t misunderstand what I am trying to say because prescription drugs for lowering cholesterol do work. I personally don&#8217;t like taking them but if you do then that is okay.</p>
<p>Fortunately there are natural and safe alternatives to prescription drugs that can lower your bad cholesterol and raise the good. The very first thing you need to be aware of is your diet. Certain foods, that are high in saturated fat such as red meat and whole-fat dairy products all contain bad cholesterol. You should try to limit your intake of these foods and instead eat foods that include vegetables, whole grains and fruits. Also to increase your HDL or good cholesterol you can eat foods that are rich in essential good fats like certain fish and walnuts.</p>
<p>Another step to reversing the effects of high cholesterol is cardiovascular exercise but before you get started you should first consult with a physician.
