If their blood pressure reading is borderline or high then the frequency of checking should be increased to at least once a year.

You cant be diagosed with high blood pressure on the basis of only one reading. At least four separate readings should show high levels before you are told you have high blood pressure.

Nobody should be labelled as having high blood pressure unless at least four seperate seated readings confirm the problem.

Some people with suspected high blood pressure will need a twenty four hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor check. All of those who have high blood pressure should invest in a monitor that allows them to check at home.

High Blood Pressure Treatment

Get your life in order. Improving your lifestyle is the most important aspect of modern blood pressure treatment.

Lose weight – and don’t delay. Weight loss will reduce blood pressure levels in almost everyone. It could mean the difference between needing tablets every day for life or simply managing by controlling diet and general health.

Reduce your dietary intake of alcohol and salt. Reduce your saturated fat intake, increase oily fish or take extra in the form of fish oil capsules. Eat more fibre and try to max out on fresh fruit and vegetables.

Exercise – walking is best – for thirty minutes three times a week can significantly lower high blood pressure levels. If you can’t manage thirty minutes at a time then three ten minute bursts is just as good. Don’t just sit there…. go for it!

Blood pressure medication

If you do end up needing medication for your high blood pressure then you need to chat it through with your doctor. There are lots of options and your doctor can provide you with a tailor made combination of medications to suit your own health needs.

Most high blood pressure sufferers need more than one type of medication to achieve good blood pressure control. The target blood pressure level should be below 140/80 or below 130/80 if you suffer from diabetes as well as blood pressure. Newer guidelines set the bar even lower than that – with some cardiologists aiming for readings around 115/70 as the ideal.

In reality the lower your reading is the better your long term health will be.

Diseases Caused By High Blood Pressure

There are three main diseases caused by high blood pressure. They are each life threatening and they may or may not have any symptoms other than you having high blood pressure. Many drug stores and grocery stories have blood pressure monitoring machines available to the general public for free. You should check you blood pressure every time you have you see one of these machines.

A good starting point for normal blood pressure is 120/80. The first number represents the systolic pressure. This is the maximum pressure in your arteries that is created during the contraction of the left ventricle. The second number represents the diastolic blood pressure. The diastolic pressure is the measurement of the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes. Signs of high pressure is when the systolic pressure is over 130 or when the diastolic pressure is over 90. You should contact your health care provider when either of these conditions occur.

Coronary Heart Disease.

The same plaque that blocks arteries to the brain can clog arteries that feed the heart causing coronary heart disease. All cells need oxygen from the bloodstream to survive, so reducing the amount of blood to the heart muscle can severely weaken or damage the heart muscle. If a blood clot blocks one of these coronary arteries of the heart, a heart attack can occur. If the blood is blocked for an extended time some of the cells of the heart will die. When too many of the cells of the heart die the heart can not pump oxygenated blood throughout the body very well and this can lead to other problems with the other organs of the human body and even death.

Kidney Damage.

Your kidneys are responsible for filtering the waste products from the blood stream that passes through them and to remove excess fluid. High blood pressure can damage the kidneys causing them to become less efficient. When the kidneys stop removing excessive fluid from the blood stream the heart will have to work harder, which in turn will cause even higher blood pressure. It is very important to break this vicious cycle as soon as possible. When a complete shutdown of the functions of the kidney or renal failure occurs, you will need to have kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant in order to survive.

Aneurysm.

High blood pressure will create a lot of strain on your heart and arteries. Over time the walls of the arteries will weaken and an aneurysm will result. The arteries of the human body have three layers. Then the tough outer layer of connective tissue splits and allows the two inner layers of the blood vessel balloon or bulge out an aneurysm is formed. Its like a tire of an automobile that has split allowing the inner tube to balloon outside of the protective outer tire. If the high blood pressure is allow to continue it is only a mater of time before the aneurysm explodes.

If the aneurysm is small enough then you health care provider will monitor it and watch to see if the size changes over time. If the aneurysm becomes large enough then you may require an operation to correct the problem.

You may not have any symptoms of high blood pressure that is why it is called the silent killer. Some symptom you can watch out for are the following. Ringing in your ears. Present head aches. Pain in your chest, abdominal area or lower back. Excessive fluid retention. Heart palpation or irregular heart beat at rest.

How many mg of cholesterol can you have per day if you have high cholesterol?

Some websites say 300 mg and some say 200 mg. Which one is correct?

I checked too, and i read that if your cholesterol is 5,2 – 6,5 mmol/l then you can have 300 mg per day
If the cholesterol is 6,5 – 7,8 mmol/l then you can have 200mg per day.
if the cholesterol is up to 7,8 mmol/l then you can have 150 mg / day

High Cholesterol Something We Can Change

High cholesterol levels are mainly caused by our bodies’ inability to deal with high-fat diets. Humans exercised regularly and consumed a low-fat diet for millennia. We now have easy access to fatty and high cholesterol foods, and often our lives are sedentary. The result – 1 in 3 people in the US have high cholesterol – is inevitable.

High cholesterol raises your chances of getting coronary heart disease. If you lower cholesterol, you lower the overall risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack.

If you have high cholesterol levels, cholesterol can be deposited in your coronary arteries as a plaque, where it constricts the flow of blood and contributes to coronary heart disease.

When you lower cholesterol, you can slow, stop, and reverse the buildup of plaque. When you lower cholesterol, you also reduce your risk of a heart attack. Even in people who have already suffered a heart attack, the chances of having future attacks can be substantially reduced if they lower cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance, a kind of lipid packaged inside a lipoprotein that your body needs to produce certain hormones, digestive bile, and vitamin D. A large amount of brain tissue is made up of cholesterol as it insulates the nerves. You need cholesterol to live.

There are two main types of cholesterol: LDL, or low density lipoprotein (also called “bad” cholesterol), and HDL, or high density lipoprotein (also called “good” cholesterol). If you want to lower cholesterol, you look at the total of LDL added to HDL, but you also look at individual levels of LDL and HDL. *You want to lower LDL and total cholesterol, and raise HDL.

Often people with high cholesterol also have high triglycerides, another type of lipid. Lifestyle changes that lower cholesterol, lower triglycerides as well, and all this together improves overall health.

To discover whether you need to lower cholesterol, you need a “fasting lipid profile,” or cholesterol test. Ask your physician for a test if you think you may have high cholesterol.

There are 10 good ways to lower cholesterol:

1. Reduce weight if you are overweight.

2. Eat six or more meals/snacks in small portions and well-spaced throughout the day.

3. Eat monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as canola and olive oils, nuts and seeds.

4. Eat legumes, low- or non-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other high-fiber foods.

5. Reduce saturated-fat foods such as meats, cheese, butter, baked goods, fried foods; high cholesterol foods such as butter, cheese, and meats; trans-fat foods such as processed foods with partially hydrogenated and hydrogenated oils.

6. Fast three hours before bedtime.

7. Drink lots of water.

8. Exercise daily to manage stress

9. Follow your doctor’s advice regarding medication.

10. Take supplements that lower cholesterol.

Heart disease kills more men and women in the U.S. than any other disease. Over one million Americans have heart attacks annually; half a million people die from heart disease.

The 1994 study, “Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study,” found that lowering cholesterol can prevent heart attacks and reduce death in men and women who already have heart disease and high cholesterol. High cholesterol is usually something we can change, and during the process of change we become healthier.
