Diabetes is a serious medical condition for seniors. The World Health Organization reports that 200 million men and women worldwide have been diagnosed with diabetes.

If you want to know the repercussions of Type 2 diabetes for seniors, first let me explain. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is a sudden onset type, and Type 2 is more gradual often referred to as slow-onset diabetes, because it presents itself over the course of several years.

Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when there is recurring elevated levels of blood sugar.

There are three facts everyone should know about Type 2 diabetes, but especially those over the age of 55:

1) What are the affects of uncontrolled diabetes 2) Why Type 2 diabetes is dangerous for seniors 3) Why the age of diabetes adds to the problem

What are the Affects of Uncontrolled Diabetes

Diabetes is not harmless. Uncontrolled diabetes can have severe, life-threatening complications. Here’s why.

Uncontrolled diabetes often causes complications to a person’s vital organs, such as kidney failure, heart problems, possible blindness and damage to nerves (neuropathy).

Diabetes patients over 55 years old are prone to develop coronary heart disease and stroke! The risk of dying from a heart attack is higher for those who have neuropathy, because a heart attack might feel painless and therefore not recognized. When this happens, the patient doesn’t even know they should seek medical assistance. Disaster follows.

Seniors who survive the repercussions from one or more diabetes complications may find themselves in financial difficulties if they don’t have adequate health insurance or medicare with supplemental insurance.

Diabetes is generally identified by a simple test that shows an excessively high blood sugar level. Glucose… defined by the dictionary as a syrup containing dextrose, maltose, and dextrine, obtained by the incomplete hydrolysis of starch in the body. In other words, food is consumed, digested and released into blood in a form known as glucose. The purpose is to provide you with energy. When a person has an excess of glucose, a hormone called insulin converts and stores glucose in the body for future usage.

Uncontrolled blood glucose leads to symptoms such as frequent urination, ongoing thirst, unexpected weight loss, intense hunger, frequent fatigue and more. Since many senior citizens consider these symptoms a normal part of growing old, they are not concerned and do not seek medical attention.

Uncontrolled diabetes patients may become comatose due to very high blood glucose. This is a major concern for seniors because many seniors live alone or are alone for most of the day.

Cholesterol and blood vessel thickening (atherosclerosis) are common complications of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetics may also suffer from high blood pressure caused from atherosclerosis. This presents a bunch more health problems.

Why Type 2 Diabetes is Dangerous for Seniors

Unfortunately, many people including the older generation, are unaware that diabetes is a serious condition. Many seniors don’t know or don’t believe it’s serious. Even with a doctor’s diagnosis, too many refuse to believe they have diabetes, so they don’t change their eating, exercise and lifestyle.

Many older Americans mistakenly think that diabetes can be cured by avoiding sweet food. Not true! Diabetes is not just a sugar problem. Diabetes results from several factors other than too much sugar. Type 2 diabetes comes from one or a combination of genetics, aging, obesity, unhealthy diet, and sedentary lifestyle.

Although many American senior citizens recognize the problem, inaction results because of the lack of attention or the common problem of procrastination. Click Here!

Why the Age of Diabetes Adds to the Problem

Type 2 Diabetes isn’t even 100 years old. It was recognized in 1935 by Dr. Harry Himsworth, so it is a fairly new diagnosis compared to other serious health conditions. Because Type 2 diabetes is less than 100 years old, and it’s not widely publicized (no TV commercials) many people don’t think of diabetes as life threatening, when in fact, it is.

A diabetic crisis can occur with abnormally low blood glucose due to a lack of food or physical activity. During the crisis, the person turns pale, breathes rapidly and is disoriented, cold and trembling. A diabetic crisis is fatal if not treated in time. Since many senior citizens live alone or are alone much of time, there is no one around to help in time to avoid severe consequences.

Type 2 diabetes affects seniors disproportionately because seniors are typically sedentary and/or overweight. But Type 2 diabetes for seniors can be controlled even though it’s affects for the most part can’t be reversed.

Solution: Type 2 Diabetes for Seniors

The answer is simple. A lifestyle change can save your life, and it’s never too late to begin. If you are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, take a hard and close look at what you eat and how much activity you have in your life. Just those two things can make a difference, and may even save your life.

Accept your role in the cause and control of the disease. Refrain from repeating the cause of Type 2 diabetes and Get Started Now to control it.

There is a history showing that diabetics can stay healthy if their blood sugar levels are well controlled with proper diet, healthy lifestyle and effective medications.

For seniors with Type 2 diabetes, health and well being developing a mature and realistic mindset toward the cause and control of diabetes is the answer to attaining health and long life.

In an awfully vital attempt in regulating and forbidding diabetes and the signs of diabetes several studies have disclosed 3 mechanisms which have for the most part benefited the balancing of glucose in the blood, thereby lessening the disproportion in glucose levels, and thus may also control the signs of diabetes, and other diabetic symptoms, or the cause of diabetes. As these levels get uniform the cause of diabetes or any diabetic symptoms are either structured or prevented.

The 3 mechanisms which have been detected to downgrade the fluctuations in blood glucose are (1) The slowing down of Carbohydrate Absorption. (2) The reduction of the Glycemic Index of food, and (3) Improving the Sensitivity of Insulin in the body.

1: Delaying The Absorption of Carbohydrates.

In order to delay the saturation of carbohayrates, the foods consumed must have a big measure of viscous soluble fiber. When this product or food with soluble fiber is consumed right ahead of a meal, the soluble fiber forms a gel-matrix in the digestive tract.

Thus as the gel-matrix is immediately in the system ahead of the meal, the saturation from the food from the meal is delayed and over time may reduce or avoid any signs of diabetes, other diabetic symptoms, signs of diabetes, or the originator of diabetes.

This delayed saturation happens because the soluble fiber matrix forms a slimy complex which engulfs the food, including carbohydrates and defends it from the digestive process.

Infact, the food, containing carbohydrates are lazily pulled along with the fiber matrix throughout the digestive tract forbidding all the food from doubtlessly being absorbed at the initial areas of the intestines. This process is essential in preventing the cause of diabetes, or any signs of diabetes.

owing to this detained saturation, there is little sugar (glucose) being absorbed at the same time, therefore providing an effective and reliable glucose level balance in the blood, and thus may boost in limiting the cause of diabetes, diabetic symptoms or any signs of diabetes.

But keep in mind that this does not mean that the complete amount of food or carbohydrates are not absorbed. This is just an compelling way in procrastinating the saturation over a longer period of time thus controlling and preventing too many highs and lows as food is ingested, thereby forbidding or controlling any signs of diabetes, or the cause of diabetes.

2: Reducing The Glycemic Index of Foods

Owing to the fact that all foods in particular contain distinct amounts of carbohydrates, the ingestion of distinct foods may have different effects on blood sugar (glucose) levels, consequently affecting any signs of diabetes, diabetic symptoms and the cause of diabetes. Not to mention that there are also distinct kinds of carbohydrates in foods, consequently complicating the action of digestion and absorption and that may act on glucose levels and in some way signs of diabetes, or the consequence of diabetes.

As a result of the circumstance that some carbohydrates are much easier to be digested by enzymes in the digestive tract than others, and that some carbohydrates in foods are more susceptible to digestion in the stomach, this provides the need for an effective index to measure the results on our blood glucose levels of food, in an endeavor to avert the consequence of diabetes, any signs of diabetes, or diabetic symptoms requiring the need for a Glycemic index of Foods.

The Glycemic index of foods in reality describes the glucose result of a specific food. The Glycemic index of pure glucose is 100, which is the greatest number to be found. This is so because pure glucose has the fastest and best absorption rate in the digestive tract, and can be greatly important in governing the signs of diabetes, or the cause of diabetes.

The greater the Glycemic index of any food, it’s the more excellent the effect of that particular food on glucose values and the rise of blood, energy and possibly cause of diabetes. Accordingly the desire to completely appreciate and be knowledgeable of the Glycemic index of foods in its duty in prohibiting diabetes, the cause of diabetes, or any diabetic symptoms.

Because foods with a greater Glycemic index raises the blood glucose level, folks who chooses to lose weight or to prevent any signs of diabetes are earnestly looking to eat only foods with a low Glycemic index.

Low (G.I) means a decreased supply of glucose in the blood, consequently creating less energy for the cells to eat up, resulting in perhaps weight stabalization, weight loss or even limiting diabetic symptoms, signs of diabetes or the cause of diabetes.

Various studies has depicted that Soluble Fiber decreases the Glycemic index of foods, using a mechanism which safe guards the digestive enzymes in the gut, in an endeavor to stabilize glucose levels which may prevent signs of diabetes, or the cause of diabetes.

When soluble fiber is taken prior to a meal it forms a defensive envelope around the food. This defensive envelope reduces the capability of the enzymes to charge the carbohydrates in the food, thus lessening the digestive mode of carbohydrates. And as this is done the method may also build a treatment limiting diabetes or the signs of diabetes.

3: Improving The Sensivity For Insulin.

When glucose balance is improved, the sensitivity of all cells to the hormone insulin also enhances. This is awfully important because insulin is the hormone which opens the doors in all cells to permit glucose to go in, in an attempt to provide fuel for the formulation of energy. Once this method is inadequate or out of equilibrium, diabetic symptoms, signs of diabetes or the cause of diabetes can occur.

Several studies have exhibited that the absence of the trace mineral chromium is associated to signs of diabetes, and other diabetic symptoms, as chromium helps the fastening of insulin. Whereas this mineral can be found in a number of daily foods, it is very complex to be absorbed. Some estimates that less than 2 percent of ingested chromium is literally absorbed in to the blood stream.

Once absorbed after all, this trace mineral is distributed all through the bodily tissues, and it binds to certified biomolecules which creates the effects of all activated insulin receptors much more defined and adapted and may avoid the cause of diabetes.

Even though without the presence of chromium, insulin works quite well, by having an acceptable supply of chromium as a normal quantity increases the action of the binding of insulin. And as this binding is enhanced so too is preventing any signs of diabetes.

There are two types of chromium on the market today. Chromium chloride, which is cheapo and has an absorption count of only 0.4 percent. Then there is Chromium Polinicotinate, which is an authorized form of chromium which has the proficiency to exceedingly augment absorption, and is known to help prevent the signs of diabetes.

Studies have shown that this kind of chromium, chromium polinicotinate, when absorbed in its natural type is absorbed six time greater than chromium chloride, and may block diabetes or the signs of diabetes.

Even though this may not be such a huge change on a weight basis, all the same, the identical supply of this trace mineral will have a much larger and tremendously enhanced effect when used in its authorized type to manage or to prevent any signs of diabetes.

This makes EFA’s an important part of your diet. Other sources of these fats are fish and nuts.

Flax Seed Oil is also known as Linseed Oil. FlaxSeed is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. FlaxSeed oil is highly recommended for the general well being, whole body nutrition and helps in restoring body’s natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins. The first time you see flax seeds you were probably, like “ok, they look like sesame seeds, who are you trying to fool?” They may look like sesame seeds, but boy do they pack in a lot of nutrition.

Another study has found that omega-3 fatty acids, and by extension, flaxseed, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which is an eye disease that destroys vision by damaging nerve cells in the eye.

Besides lignans, flaxseeds and their oil are also the best food sources of an essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid. “Essential” means we must consume it, because our bodies cannot manufacture it.

Diabetes: African Americans Deadly Foe

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.

Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don’t know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 – 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease.

Heredity

Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a “thrifty gene” from their African ancestors.

This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants. This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes, commonly know as “sugar diabetes”, is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored.

Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth.

Types of Diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type II diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.

Type I or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections.

Type II or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type II results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, “Type II is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don’t exercise and who have cholesterol problems.” In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed.

There are also many ways of consuming the seeds. You can simply just chew them. You can grind the seeds to make a power.

As a source of fiber mucilage, oral flaxseed (not flaxseed oil) may possess laxative properties, although only one human trial has been conducted for this indication. Researchers found low incidences of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of Lignan in their diet.

Flax Hull Lignans are very beneficial for many health conditions. Studies have shown that SDG or lignan (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, but for simplicity this substance will be referred to as lignans)

The fiber in flaxseeds may also help against cholesterol, since it is soluble (similar to that in oats). Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The most common symptoms of diabetes include:

excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom

increased thirst

increased appetite

blurred vision

unusual weight loss

increased fatigue

irritability

Complications from Diabetes

Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes

Kidney Disease

“Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year,” says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.

Amputations

Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States. More than sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in America occur among people with diabetes and African Americans are almost three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 82,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed among people with diabetes in 2001.

Blindness

African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness. Diabetics can develop a condition called “Diabetic Retinopathy”, a disease affecting the blood vessels of the eye, which can lead to impaired vision and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people from 20 – 74 years of age and up to 24,000 people loose their sight each year because of diabetes.

Heart Disease

People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease as people who don’t have diabetes. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is more common in diabetics and can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and poor circulation throughout the body.

Diabetes Risk Factors

You have a greater risk for developing diabetes if you have any of the following:

Obesity

Family history of diabetes

Pre-diabetes

Low physical activity

Age greater than 45 years

High blood pressure

High blood levels of triglycerides

HDL cholesterol of less than 35

Previous diabetes during pregnancy or baby weighing more than 9 pounds

Diabetes has had a devastating effect on the African American community; it is the fifth leading cause of death and second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans. African Americans suffer from complications from diabetes at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. African Americans are three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated because of diabetes and twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness.

If you have any of the diabetes risk factors you should contact your physician and have a blood glucose test. Also discuss with your physician lifestyle changes you can take to lower your chances of developing diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease kills more Americans than the next 7 causes of death combined – including cancer – the AHA report states. In this Omega-3 benefits and facts section you will learn the basics about omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA) from fish oils and their function in our bodies.

Not being ignorant about this debilitating condition that is affecting more and more people as times go on is very important. Much of the increase in diabetes mellitus cases is due to poor lifestyle choices that a lot of people make. This article discusses the various symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Knowing the warning signs of diabetes and the various tips for reversing diabetes should hopefully allow you to make better choices for yourself and help you fight this disease.

Properly managing diabetes and curing diabetes in some cases will allow you to greatly improve the quality of your life. Diabetes is one of the identified silent killers mainly because the symptoms of diabetes if any at all, can develop over many years without the diabetic being any the wiser which makes periodic checkups vital in the fight against diabetes mellitus.

What is Diabetes?

To answer the question “what is diabetes?” it is important to understand what happens in the body after consuming food. When we consume food, mainly carbohydrates and sugars, it is converted by the body into glucose which is the simplest form of sugars. This is one of the reasons that most people refer to this disease as sugar diabetes.

This glucose is then released into the bloodstream and must be removed from the blood to prevent damage to vital organs in the body such as the heart and kidneys and distributed to the various cells in the body because this is the source of the energy that the body needs to function properly and for day to day activities.

Insulin which is a hormone produced by the pancreas that when properly functioning is responsible for the removal and distribution of this glucose to the various cells or stored for later use as needed.

When the pancreas produces no insulin, too little insulin or the body develops a resistance to the insulin produced, this leads to diabetes mellitus. With this disease and the problems with insulin, the glucose ends up accumulating in the bloodstream with no place to go only to be secreted in urine which is a waste of glucose and the energy that it provides.

The accumulation of this glucose in the blood with no place to go after an extended period of time will lead to diabetes related complications such as nerve damage that could lead to the necessity for limb amputations, heart and kidney disease from the damage to these organs resulting from the excess glucose levels in the blood stream, diabetic comas, various skin conditions, high blood pressure that can lead to eye problems, stroke, heart attack and kidney disease, etc.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 diabetes

The first type of of this disease is type 1 diabetes which occurs when insulin is not produced by the pancreas. This is also known as juvenile diabetes because it usually begins in childhood. Due to no insulin being produced, the person suffering from this disease requires daily shots of insulin for survival.

Type 2 diabetes

The second type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes that usually develops in adulthood. This is when the pancreas does not produce sufficient quantities of insulin that is required to remove all the glucose from the blood. This also develops when the body develops a resistance to the insulin that is produced by the pancreas which causes the glucose to accumulate in the blood.

Gestational diabetes

The third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which usually develops in a soon to be mother usually during the third trimester of a pregnancy. After childbirth, gestational diabetes may disappear on its own after a few months. In some other cases, the woman may develop type 2 diabetes at a later point in life.

Diabetes Symptoms

There are various types of diabetes symptoms that can develop over several years. Proper treatment of diabetes and diabetes symptoms is important for survival and to allow a diabetic to lead a full and productive life. Here a some of the symptoms of diabetes that are related to type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Identifying the warning signs of diabetes will help a diabetic manage and even cure diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

- Being excessively thirsty

- Frequent urination- Experiencing excessive hunger- Unusual weight loss that is sudden and without a reasonable explanation- Fatigue and a level of irritability during the day

Type 2 diabetes

- Experiencing any of the above symptoms

- Unusual and sudden changes in vision and eyesight- Slow healing of cuts and wounds- Developing infections quite frequently- Experiencing numbness and/or tingling in the feet and hands- Suffering from very dry skin or itchy skin

Type 2 diabetes which is more common than type 1 diabetes may not produce any warning signs of diabetes which is why diabetes is sometimes referred to as one of the silent killers as mentioned previously. Since no symptoms of diabetes may be produced with type 2 diabetes, annual diabetes testing is important.

Tips for Reversing Diabetes

There are many treatment options that can be used to not only overcome diabetes and the related symptoms of diabetes as well as the diabetes related complications but that will also help you cure diabetes.

The first step of course is periodic checkups to ensure that you do not have the disease and if it is discovered that you do have the disease, following the recommended treatment methods will help to treat this condition successfully. Your doctor may recommend various diabetes medications for the management of diabetes. Diabetes meters are an important way to monitor your blood sugar levels and take remedial steps if the sugar levels are too high or too low.

Natural methods for the treatment of diabetes are probably the best way to combat this disease that will either allow you to properly manage the disease or to cure it. Following a proper diabetic diet that may include carbohydrate counting is important to treat the condition naturally. Increasing your level of physical activity is also key.
