Extrinsic Asthma – Causes and Treatments
Article by Latifah Alma
There are many kinds of asthma and one of these is extrinsic asthma. When foreign particles such as antigen or allergen enters our body, may these be harmless or not, the immune system reacts to these particles automatically as its way of protecting us to whatever these may cause us. It forms antibodies which are also produced when fighting viruses and bacteria. This defense scenario is what causes extrinsic asthma.
This kind of asthma is also known as Allergic or Atopic asthma. Most people with this kind have also other related allergy problems and have trigger elements that every patient must know to avoid such occurrences.
When not treated, this may develop into a complicated problem and become chronic asthma. From the start, you must stop smoking or better if you never try at all. As much as possible avoid any substance that may irritate your lungs. Visit your doctor for check-ups, especially if you already have experienced attacks before. Know the things or particles that trigger your asthma. Common triggers include pollen, mold, dust, feather, animal fur and certain food. Once you have known the triggers, avoid having contact with those as much as you can. You can clean your house and use things that produce less or zero allergen. Take medications that are prescribed by your doctor. These medicines are usually in the form of fast-acting drugs or preventive medications that will normalize or counteract the asthma symptoms whenever you face triggers in unexpected situations. Every treatment depends on the degree of the asthma you have so make sure to see your doctor for check-ups.
What is extrinsic asthma?Asthma triggered by allergies is known as extrinsic asthma. It is also called allergic or atopic asthma. In this form of the disease, an asthma attack is clearly linked to the body’s response to something inhaled or, occasionally, ingested. Substances to which the person is allergic are called allergens.
What sorts of things can be allergens? The most common allergens are tree and grass pollen, mold, animal dander and dust mites.
Who develops extrinsic asthma?Asthma that develops in childhood is likely to be extrinsic. More than 90 percent of asthmatic children under age 16 have allergies, as do 70 percent of asthmatic people ages 16 to 30, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases . Symptoms of extrinsic asthma often vary seasonally and occur intermittently. In more than half the cases of extrinsic asthma, there is usually a personal or family history of other allergies, such as hay fever and skin conditions.
What is intrinsic asthma?Asthma that develops in people over the age of 30 is usually intrinsic or nonallergic asthma. As the names imply, this asthma is not allergy related.
What is it related to?It is related to triggers such as respiratory infections, exercise, stress, inhalation of chemical irritants (such as cleaning fluids or fresh paint) and air pollution. While doctors believe that extrinsic asthma is caused by an overactive immune system, they do not yet understand the origins of intrinsic asthma.
Is it important to know which form of asthma I have?
Insofar it helps you understand your disease and suggests a path for medical treatment, yes. However, you should be aware that most people with asthma have both forms. For example, it is very common for someone with the extrinsic form of the disease to experience asthma attacks when she has a cold or the flu – both intrinsic triggers. Extrinsic and intrinsic are two terms that attempt to describe the source and trigger of the asthma. Other types of asthma have been named after the particular situations in which they occur, such as nocturnal asthma, seasonal asthma and exercise-induced asthma.

Cancer in the stomach, or gastric cancer, is often a illness wherein stomach tissues turn into malignant (cancerous) and increase out of control, forming a tumor. Almost all (95%) start inside the glandular tissue that lines the stomach. The tumor may spread together the stomach wall or may expand directly through the wall and shed cells to the bloodstream or lymphatic system. As soon as past the stomach, cancer can unfold to other organs.
Tissues from malignant tumors can unfold (metastasize) to other elements of the physique. Cancer cells unfold by breaking aside from the unique tumor and entering the bloodstream or even the lymphatic process. The tissues invade other organs and kind new tumors that injury these organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis. You’ll find about 9,000 new cases of diagnosed every year and it’s far more typical in adult men, specifically in late middle age. Cancer can both be malignant or benign. Benign cancer is curable, which means that there exists some health-related means of becoming capable of provide a curing resolution on the cancer-hit part of the system. To the other hand, malignant cancer is usually a lot extra critical because this means that cancer has created into some thing complicated the place medical sources have close to lesser chances of medicinal resolution.
Individuals who’ve pernicious anaemia (an autoimmune problem exactly where the lining with the stomach becomes thin, less acid is created and anaemia develops on account of lack of vitamin B12), atrophic gastritis, or a hereditary situation of growths inside the stomach are at a higher possibility of building this sort of cancer.
A diet plan excessive in salt and nitrates and reduced in natural vitamins A and C will increase the danger for stomach cancer. Other dietary risk variables involve foods preparation (e.g., preserving food items by smoking, salt-curing, pickling, or drying) and atmosphere (e.g., lack of refrigeration, bad drinking mineral water). A diet regime high in uncooked fruits and vegetables, citrus fruits, and fiber may perhaps lessen the risk for stomach cancer.
Stomach polyps might grow to be cancerous (malignant) and therefore are thus eliminated. Adenocarcinoma in the stomach is particularly likely to create in the event the polyps consist of glandular tissue, if the polyps are greater than ¾ inch (two centimeters), or if numerous polyps exist.

Arthritis -Its Causes and Prevention Tips
Article by alena jones
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. It can occur anywhere in the body and, based on that, there are several types of arthritis. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which is the common ailment of pain in the joints observed in elderly people. Other common types of arthritic ailments are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
The word arthritis is derived from two root Greek words – arthros meaning ‘joint’ and it is meaning ‘inflammation’. Hence, arthritis literally translates as inflammation of the joints.
Arthritis is an auto-immune disease, which means, it is a disease in which the human body attacks itself. It begins in one or two joints where an acute pain is felt. This is the most miserable phase of arthritis. Over time, this pain may disappear, but it could cause permanent deformities in the bones and joints.
Arthritis symptoms
Ache and inflexibility in the joints, anemia, colitis
The main symptoms of osteoarthritis are ache and firmness in the joints. The pain frequently increases after work out. Rheumatoid arthritis is often called the ‘cooked food ailment’. lt regularly develops gradually over several months, with persistent pain and stiffness in one or additional joints. Finally the whole body is affected. Symptoms contain anemia, colitis, constipation, deformed hands and feet.
Root of Arthritis
Structural changes in articular cartilage in the joint
Osteoarthritis results from structural changes in the articular cartilage in the joints, frequently those which are weight-bearing, such as the spine and knees.
Hormonal disparity, physical and emotional strain
Rheumatoid arthritis is due to an soreness of the synovium or lining of the joints. This is accompanied by puffiness and eventually leads to irregularity. The situation may be caused by hormonal disparity, physical and emotional stress, infection, cruel fright, shock, and injury.
Genetics
Family factors may also be responsible for the onset of this disease
Three Most Common Types of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis – the most common type of arthritis. This degenerative joint disease affects over 16 million Americans. This form of arthritis is caused when the cartilage surrounding the ends of the bones begins to degenerate and the joints are no longer cushioned. This caused the joints to rub together and in severe cases, you can hear the bones grating against one another. At the onset of osteoarthritis, the symptoms are usually mild and consist of pain and stiffness of the joints. As the disease progresses, inflammation and loss of motion can occur. In some severe cases, deformity can occur if the grinding joints wear one side of the joint more than the other.
Rheumatoid arthritis – This is the second most common type of arthritis and the most severe. Symptoms usually begin appearing between the ages of 25 and 50 – however, children and senior citizens can experience the onset of this disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is considered an autoimmune disease because factors other than wear and tear of cartilage can cause the disease and the disease can affect other organs, such as the eyes, lungs, and heart.
Fibromyalgia – This is a type of arthritis that does not directly affect the joints. Rather, the inflammation and pain affect the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues under the skin. Many patients have tender spots under the skin that are painful when any type of pressure is applied. The symptoms for Fibromyalgia include deep muscle pain, fatigue, sleeplessness, and depression. Symptoms may come and go, but the disease is long term and chronic.
Arthritis Treatment and Prevention Tips
1.Treatment options is depending on the type of arthritis and include physical and occupational therapy, and medications (symptomatic or targeted at the disease process causing the arthritis).
2.Arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) may be required in eroding forms of arthritis.
3.In conventional treatment, painkillers, such as paracetamol, are essential. Anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, can help with episodes of more severe pain.
4.In recent years a new type of NSAID treatment, called Cox-2 inhibitors, has been launched. These were initially claimed to be less harmful to the stomach and many patients have found that they provided good pain relief for their arthritis.
5.Physiotherapy relieves pain and strengthens muscles around the damaged joint, helping the joint to work better.
6.Regular exercise is beneficial for the same reasons and, once pain is under control, easy to do.
7.Hip and knee replacements are common and usually involve a short hospital visit.
8.Disease-modifying drugs that slow disease progression are available for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

High Blood Pressure – What Is It? What Causes It?
Article by Sandra Nelson
The American Heart Association estimates that high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) affects approximately one inthree adults in the United States – 73 million people. Two million children and teenagers are also affected by this disorder, and JAMA reports that many are under-diagnosed.
Symptoms of high blood pressure
When symptoms are present, they’re often in the form of a headache, dizziness, blurred vision, and nausea and other effects. But it is for good reason that the many people refer to high blood pressure as the ‘silent killer’. The fact is that oftentimes thesymptoms are either slight or nonexistent. Therefore it is important for everyone, even those who think they don’t have highblood pressure, to monitor their blood pressure on a regular basis.
Checking your blood pressure
Hypertension is risky but almost completely preventable. You can reduce your risks of heart attack and stroke with propermonitoring by a health care provider and simple lifestyle changes, even if you already have high blood pressure. Your localfire station is also equipped to perform a quick blood pressure check if you have concerns. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90, you have what is called “pre-hypertension. Blood pressure is measured by putting a blood pressure cuffaround your arm, inflating it and listening for the flow of blood. Your doctor will take this measurement at more than onevisit to see if you have chronic high blood pressure. But why be so concerned about blood pressure?
Reasons to be concerned
Every year, high blood pressure causes more than 25,000 new cases of kidney failure in the united states. It is a major riskfactor for heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.Hypertension is dangerous because it makes the heart to work too hard and contributes to atherosclerosis (hardening of thearteries). It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, which are the first- and third-leading causes of death amongAmericans. High blood pressure also can result in other conditions, such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease, andblindness. A blood pressure level of 140/90 mm hg or higher is considered high. About two-thirds of people over age 65 havehigh blood pressure. The disorder is more common in African Americans than Caucasians.
Causes of high blood pressure
Smoking, obesity, and diabetes, are all risk factors for hypertension. High blood pressure that results from a specificcondition, habit, or medication is called secondary hypertension. Other factors that have been associated with essentialhypertension include obesity, diabetes, stress, insufficient intake of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, lack of physicalactivity, smoking and chronic alcohol consumption.
Treatment of high blood pressure
Treatment depends on how high your blood pressure is, whether you have other health problems such as diabetes, and whetherany organs have already been damaged. Generally treatment will proceed with changes you can make to your lifestyle to helplower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease. Of course a dangerously high blood pressure level mayrequire your doctor to use prescribed medicines to bring your pressure down to a safe level.

Controlling High Blood Pressure – Causes and Remedies
Article by Simon Foster
The first step to controlling high blood pressure is to know the cause.
Officially the cause of 90% of high blood pressure is “unknown”. But no worries. The actual causes of hypertension are well known. What the official position means is that hypertension can’t be ascribed to one single cause.
When we examine the actual statistics and our own personal experiences then controlling high blood pressure by determining and treating the causes is the way forward.
Below are the five main causes of high blood pressure.
Our Modern Diet.
That frozen take-home meal may taste great, not to mention fast and convenient. It might also be slowly killing us. I’m talking about highly processed foods full of saturated fats, trans-fats, salt, etc. Over time all these unnecessary additives clog up our system and increase our blood pressure. These days we are literally eating ourselves to death.
The good news is that there are all sorts of delicious alternatives. Better yet, you can control your high blood pressure by switching to a healthy and tasty diet. Over time this can reverse the effects of of a bad diet that caused high blood pressure in the first place.
Lack of Exercise.
Unfortunately, the comforts of modern lifestyles brings with it a new set of problems. Raised blood pressure due to lack of exercise is one of them. Controlling high blood pressure through daily exercise is a simple and easy to implement remedy.
High blood pressure caused by Stress.
Modern life and stress seems to go hand in hand. It is often invisible but seeps into our life nevertheless, raising our blood pressure and shortening our lives.
If there’s too much stress in your life there are ways to relief it and see it off. Stress reducing techniques (such as slow breathing exercises) have now been accepted as valid approach to controlling high blood pressure by mainstream medicine.
Genetics.
Some families suffer from high blood pressure more than others. It’s called genetics. If your parents suffer from high blood pressure then there’s a greater chance of you developing it too.
But that doesn’t mean its your fate to suffer from high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure ‘in the genes’ it simply means that you have to put more effort into controlling high blood pressure.
Aging.
As we get older our blood circulatory system ages with us. Our veins tend to get smaller and harder. The medical establishment calls it atherosclerosis..
This used to be taken into consideration when determining health blood pressure. Systolic 100 plus your age was considered OK. Not anymore. 120/80 is now the blood pressure shoe size that’s supposed to fit everyone
There is nothing we can do about getting older but there’s things we can do to slow down the effects of time and controlling high blood pressure.
So these are the five main causes causes of high blood pressure.
Controlling high blood pressure caused by the first three causes is reasonably straightforward. Changing our diet, start exercising and reducing stress levels.
Controlling high blood pressure caused by aging can be accomplished by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Also, powerful antioxidants are now available which can slow or even reverse the effects of age.
Hypertension due to genetics cannot be ‘cured’ but it can be controlled. Having high blood pressure in the family doesn’t mean you are doomed. It does mean however, that you’ll have to work harder at controlling high blood pressure and keeping it within a healthy range.

The many causes of cancer
Article by Andy Lim
The many causes of cancerThere are about 200 different types of cancer. They can start in any type of body tissue. What affects one body tissue may not affect another. For example, tobacco smoke that you breathe in may help to cause lung cancer. Overexposing your skin to the sun could cause a melanoma on your leg. But the sun won’t give you lung cancer and smoking won’t give you melanoma.
Apart from infectious diseases, most illnesses are ‘multifactorial’. Cancer is no exception. Multi factorial means that there are many factors involved. In other words, there is no single cause for any one type of cancer.
Cancer-causing substances (carcinogens)A ‘carcinogen’ is something that can help to cause cancer. Tobacco smoke is a powerful carcinogen. But not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. So there must be other factors at work as well as carcinogens.Age
Most types of cancer become more common as we get older. This is because the changes that make a cell become cancerous in the first place take a long time to develop. There have to be a number of changes to the genes within a cell before it turns into a cancer cell. These changes can happen by accident when the cell is dividing. Or they can happen because the cell has been damaged by carcinogens and the damage is then passed on to future ‘daughter’ cells when that cell divides. The longer we live, the more time there is for genetic mistakes to happen in our cells.
There need to be a number of genetic mutations within a cell before it becomes cancerous. Sometimes a person is born with one of these mutations already. This doesn’t mean they will definitely get cancer. But with one mutation from the start, it makes it more likely statistically that they will develop cancer during their lifetime. Doctors call this ‘genetic predisposition’.
The BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes are examples of genetic predisposition. Women who carry one of these faulty genes have a higher chance of developing breast cancer than women who do not.The BRCA genes are good examples for another reason. Most women with breast cancer do not have a mutated BRCA1 or BRCA 2 gene. Less than 5% of all breast cancer is due to these genes. So although women with one of these genes are individually more likely to get breast cancer, most breast cancer is not caused by a high risk inherited gene fault. This is true of other common cancers where some people have a genetic predisposition – for example, colon (large bowel) cancer.Researchers are looking at the genes of people with cancer in a study called SEARCH. They also hope to find out more about how other factors might interact with genes to increase the risk of cancer. Information about this study is on our clinical trials database. People who have problems with their immune systems are more likely to get some types of cancer. This group includes people who
* Have had organ transplants and take drugs to suppress their immune systems to stop organ rejection* Have HIV or AIDS* Are born with rare medical syndromes which affect their immunityThe types of cancers that affect these groups of people fall into two, overlapping groups* Cancers that are caused by viruses, such as cervical cancer and other cancers of the genital or anal area, some lymphomas, liver cancer and stomach cancer* LymphomasChronic infections or transplanted organs can continually stimulate cells to divide. This continual cell division means that immune cells are more likely to develop genetic faults and develop into lymphomas.Day to day environment
By environmental causes we mean what is around you each day that may help to cause cancer. This could include* Tobacco smoke* The sun* Natural and man made radiation* Work place hazards* Asbestos* Viruses* Viruses can help to cause some cancers. But this does not mean that these cancers can be caught like an infection. What happens is that the virus can cause genetic changes in cells that make them more likely to become cancerous.
