Understanding Heart Diseases in American Bulldogs

Article by Ricardo Lumbardo

What Heart Diseases Can Affect Your Dog?

Just as there are several heart diseases that can affect human beings, dogs are also vulnerable to a wide variety of canine heart diseases. Some heart problems in dogs are inborn, some are developed through their growing years, and some are developed when the dog gets older. The frequency of dog heart disease in older dogs is higher than those in younger dogs. Some heart problems in dogs are minor, but some are large-scale and can lead to complete heart failure. One of the most common heart disease that can affect your dog is patent ductus arteriosus. This occurs when the blood from the heart is returned to the heart, instead of being distributed all throught the dog’s body. In essence, this has to do with abnormal blood flow. This happens when there is an abnormality in the functions of the ducts that connect thee heart to the rest of the organs. There are also common heart diseases such as enlargement of the heart. On the other hand, the most serious kind of heart problem in dogs is CHF, known as Congestive Heart Failure, which basically refers to the weakening of the heart and inability to perform its functions. This can completely take the life out of your dog, not only through death, but also by limiting its abilities to engage in certain exercises.

Symptoms of Dog Heart Diseases

Symptoms of heart diseases in dogs can vary based on the type of disease. The usual symptoms include rapid or shallow breathing, coughing, and weakening during strenuous activities. Your dog may also suffer from a loss of appetite, and can even experience fainting in extreme curcumstances. If there are already basic symptoms, you can check if your dog’s gums are paler than usual. If you detect any symptoms, you should immediately get your dog diagnosed. There are many ways to do so, one of which is through cardiac ultrasound.

Treatment and Prevention of Canine Heart Diseases

Heart problems in dogs can be prevented through regular checkups and consultation with your veterinarian. Don’t wait for symptoms of any kind of disease to start showing. Remember to get regular checkups, and always ask your veterinarian about heart diseases. This way, the veterinarian can properly check. In case a heart problem is detected, the time of detection is very crucial. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better chances your dog has of fighting it through normal treatment options. Another reason why heart problems in dogs should be diagnosed early is that any kind of heart problem can also cause problems to other organs, due to the lack of enough blood, or abnormal blood flow. Aside from regular vet visits, you can also prevent canine heart diseases with a proper diet plan for your dog, which will keep away obesity, which actually plays a role in causing heart diseases in dogs. There are also available heart medications for dogs, but you have to be cautious when using them because most causes negative side effects to dogs. However, in severe cases, the only thing that can save a badly affected dog from a fatal heart problem is surgery. But since heart problems in dogs are very common, surgeries to treat canine heart diseases are often practiced and have a high rate of success.

American Heart Month: Ways to Prevent Heart Diseases

Article by Jessica Vandelay

Cardiovascular or heart diseases, including stroke, are the No. 1 killer in the U.S. and worldwide. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases February is designated by Congress as “American Heart Month.”Heart disease is responsible for 40 percent of all the deaths in the U.S., more than all forms of cancer combined. Most forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices including diet and exercise. Read more about ways to prevent heart diseases in health magazines like Prevention, Men’s Health, Health and Women’s Health.

American Heart Month is sponsored by the American Heart Association, a national voluntary health agency. The American Heart Association works with the Congress to draft and sign the annual American Heart Month proclamation. The purpose of American Heart Month is to raise awareness of and funds for research to cure heart diseases.

The mission of the American Heart association is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010, according to the agency’s web site.

Heart disease is a broad term—it describes a range of diseases that affect your heart. These various diseases include cardiovascular diseases, like coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems and congenital heart defects—defects people are born with.

Heart disease is also known as cardiovascular disease, which refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as infections and conditions that affect your heart’s muscle, valves or beating rhythm also are considered forms of heart disease.

Heart disease risk factors include: • Your age: Aging increases your risk of damaged and narrowed arteries and weakened or thickened heart muscle, which contribute to heart disease. • Your gender: Men are generally at greater risk of heart disease. The risk for women increases after menopause. • Your family history: If you have a family history of heart disease your risk of coronary artery disease, especially if a parent developed it at an early age increases dramatically. • Smoking: Nicotine constricts your blood vessels, and carbon monoxide may damage blood vessel inner linings. Heart attacks are more common in smokers than in nonsmokers. • Poor diet: A high fat, salt and cholesterol diet can increase the development of heart disease. • High blood pressure: High blood pressure can result in hardening and thickening of your arteries, narrowing the vessels through which blood flows. • High blood cholesterol levels: High levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of formation of plaques and atherosclerosis. Plaques can be caused by a high level of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), known as “bad” cholesterol, or a low level of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), known as “good” cholesterol. • Diabetes: Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease. Both conditions share similar risk factors, such as obesity and high blood pressure. • Obesity: Excess weight typically worsens other risk factors. • Physical inactivity: Lack of exercise is associated with many forms of heart disease and some of its other risk factors too. Read magazines like Shape, Women’s Health and Men’s Health for exercise tips.• High stress: Unrelieved stress in your life may damage your arteries as well as worsen other heart disease risk factors. • Poor hygiene: Over exposure to viral or bacterial infections can put you at risk of heart infections. Researchers also believe poor dental health may contribute to heart disease. Germs on your teeth and gums can travel from your mouth to your heart, potentially worsening coronary artery disease.

The Different Forms of Canine Diabetes

There are two different forms of dog diabetes that can affect your pet. These are diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus. Diabetis mellitus are the same as human diabetes, which occurs due to the lack of insulin. On the other hand, diabetes insipidus occurs when your dog lacks vasopressin.  As can be expected, diabetes mellitus is more common. Diabetes mellitus, in itself, comes in two forms. Diabetes mellitus can be, just like in humans, a Type I diabetes, which means that it is congenital. It can also be a Type II diabetes, which refers to diabetes that only develops later on in life.

The Factors Responsible for Diabetes in Dogs

Diabetes is closely related to a wide variety of other dog diseases. These diseases can usually contribute or cause the insulin deficiency, thus causing the diabetes.

The Indicators of Diabetic Dogs

Loss of appetite and weight loss are the top two symptoms that can occur in diabetic dogs. Other symptoms also affect the diabetic dog’s eating and drinking habits. Diabetic dogs can be observed to be as if constantly hungry and thirsty. Frequent urination can also be a supporting symptom. At first, the symptoms are mild, but when the dog owner fails to notice, the condition will likely get worse. If the initial symptoms are ignored or unidentified, the diabetic dog may start to experience nausea and vomiting, and decreased resistance against bacteria. This makes dogs with diabetes very vulnerable to other diseases such as bladder and kidney disorders. Even a diabetic dog’s behavior can be modified. Canine diabetes may cause depression in the diabetic dog. If you see any of the above symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult your veterinarian for an examination. Lab tests will be conducted to search for ketones, which are released by the liver when there is a lack of insulin. The mere presence of ketones is an indicator of diabetes. The glucose level will also be determined to check for hyperglycemia and other indicative symptoms as well.

The Treatment Alternatives for Diabetes in Dogs

The primary form of treatment for diabetes in dogs is the injection of insulin, which obviously counteracts what causes the disease in the first place. There are different kinds of insulins that can be injected. The main difference lies in the length of effective time. There are short-acting insulins which, as the term implies, only remains effective up to four hours after injection. Ironically, short-acting insulins are actually stronger than medium-range insulins, and long-range insulins. These two other types of insulin last for up to 24 hours or 28 hours from the time of injection, respectively. The choice of which insulin to inject depends on the dog’s system and the level of the disease. A veterinarian will still need to check which insulin, and in what amounts, is necessary for every diabetic dog case. Regular visits are also necessary so the situation can be further observed. Needless to say, to treat diabetes in dogs, you, as a dog owner, needs to be committed to helping your dog overcome the disease. Since insulin shots are usually necessary on a daily basis, you need to really devote time to help your pet get well.
