    on most engines the exhaust valve has more tappet clearance because of the expansion of the exhaust valve stem

    Rockin Dave, once again u have proven your value as a small engine technician. Your discussion of that mysterious “extra bump” on the exhaust cam lobe was just what I needed. I noticed this on my Tecumseh 5 hp. I shortened valve, now it pulls hard as heck to start, thought I was hallucenating, u cleared up a rarely spoken of aspect of small engines, I never dreamed of or heard of this, it is not a malfunction, it makes engine rope pull much easier, now I need to replace that valve to length.
